• On July 8, 1497 Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama left Lisbon for India, the fabled land of silks and spices. Many believed his quest meant certain death. But two years later Da Gama returned to Portugal, albeit with less than a third of his crew. The survivors completed one of history's most daring voyages: a 27,000-mile journey that propelled Portugal to the forefront of international power and commerce. But its ripples extended far beyond Europe. Vasco da Gama's voyage not only expanded the known world; it thoroughly changed it.
